Oslo opened its first new metro line in 10 years this weekend, and got a brand new stop to match it. Of course I had to go check it out while it’s still clean.

The new line connects the preexisting stops Økern and Sinsen , going through the Løren area previously not served by the Oslo metro. Lørenbanen has been built in three years, and is a 1.6 km long tunnel between two older lines. It creates a new alternative when travelling east/west in Oslo, by not having to go through the city centre like earlier. It will also make more frequent traffic through a densely populated area possible. The new Løren station is the 101. stop (the largest amount of the Nordic countries) on the Oslo metro, and is built 26 meters underground. The whole project had a cost of 1330 million NOK, or roughly 160 million USD. 350 000 cubic meters of rock was removed in total, all to transport 8000 people per day.

Two of these escalators transported you down to the platform

Meanwhile, here in the US we can’t even build a new subway station that doesn’t leak:

Wonder how much will be wrong with this line the first year. Station looks solid, though they probably used this much shotcrete and paint for a reason.

I love the DC stations, and was absolutely horrified by Metro’s plan to waste money making them look like an Apple store, because they hate brown or something:

It’s not going so hot for them right now either though:

Our light-rail system in Seattle cannot compare to your metro, but I’m still excited about the new stations that just opened last month at Capitol Hill and the University of Washington. These stations are underground; the trains operate in tunnels just like a heavy-rail metro system.

H’mmm.

€140m to move 8,000 people 1.6km daily or about 20min walk each way.

But then I suppose it’s likely to be wet or snowing a lot of the time so there’s that.

Good to see they’ve translated Sentrum as “City Centre” as opposed to “City Center”.

Underground stuff is awesome, even if it is roads, light rails, metro- or trainlines! They plan to extend the tramlines here as well as buying new trams, though I don’t think I’ll live in Oslo then..

Tunnels aren’t cheap..

Though it is justified because the capacity of the whole metro network increases with this slight modification. I realize now that the 8000 number might just be the amount going to that single station..

Tunnels certainly aren’t cheap, although in comparison the Laerdal tunnel (24km, 1 bn kr) looks like a bargain.

Yes, I’ve been through it.

I think that difference is due to...

- Needing more space underground per km for the metro line to run in both directions, and the building of a station.

- Building in folded sedimentary rocks (some of which are classified as hazardous waste) opposed to harder metamorphic rock in Lærdal.

- Connecting the line to the existing network, going up/down and left/right at exactly the right place. Lærdal is roughly a straight line through a mountain.

- Building in a densely populated area vs in the countryside.

..but that is just me speculating.
